Are concrete borders a new product and do they last?
This product has been used very successfully during the last five years. They have been tried and tested in many areas across the United States and in similar climates and terrain to Springfield and the surrounding area. Your concrete curbing is designed to last a lifetime.
Can I buy these concrete borders at retail stores?
No! Our concrete borders are not pieces or sections that you can buy at any store. They are professionally poured with specialized machines. The breaks you see approximately every 3' are expansion control joints. Our borders are custom designed and installed for each site.
How long does an average job take?
An average job of 150 feet will take about 4-6 hours from start to finish, depending on the terrain.
Are you limited to a design layout, such as with landscape timbers?
No! Our concrete borders are ideal for most any terrain. A small concrete extruding machine is very easily maneuvered, thereby providing the design flexibility needed for your specific lawn type. It effortlessly curves to allow you designed flexibility for your specific yard. We will happily help you identify the border that will be best suited for your specific yard needs.
Do I need to do anything to prepare for your arrival?
There are a few things that we will need in order to complete the job, including access to a water source (hose hook-up). You will need to have any and all subterranean objects such as sprinkler heads marked. We are not responsible for contacting the utility department or identifying these objects (e.g. invisible fences, cable lines, sprinkler systems, etc.).
How is it when mowing around it?
That is one of its many perks! You can simply run your mower right alongside your new Border X'pressions. You will not have to worry about knocking over concrete blocks or plastic edging that you spent hours laying.
How strong is our border?
Our border has a compression strength of 3,700 lbs per square foot and is designed to last a lifetime.
What about frost and ground movement?
The benefit of our concrete edging is that is a continuous piece of concrete. Individual blocks or bricks will shift over time and in the winter. Our curb is reinforced with fiber-mesh which is designed to take the place of re-bar or steel and adds strength to the curb. We place control/expansion joints every three feet. This helps control the cracking of the curb during shifting periods and colder months. We experience very little cracking, however concrete does and will crack. Even so, we take every precaution to limit the cracking.
Is the color painted or stained on the curb?
All of the colors are iron oxide pigments that are mixed into the concrete during the mixing process. The color will not flake off or disappear over time. You may experience a little fading, but this is normal in any outdoor color application. A sealer can aid in the lifetime of the color. We recommend sealing every year.
How often should I seal my border?
You should seal your border once a year for the best curb appeal. Our sealer helps keep the color from fading and, more importantly, keeps your water and dirt from penetrating. The sealer comes in two finishes: matte and high gloss. We can arrange to seal your border for you on a yearly basis if you wish.
Can children or pets damage the curb?
The concrete curb is very vulnerable during the first 24 to 48 hours of installation. It is imperative to keep guests, children, and pets away from the curb for the first few days. In addition, many homeowners have irrigation systems which need to be turned off the day before our arrival and not turned back on until two days after installation. If the curb is damaged from any type of force we can fix the curb, however there will be an additional fee for this service.
After the first few days, the curb is strong enough that animals and children cannot hurt the curb if they step on it. It is okay to rake your bed covering back into place a few days after installation. Just make sure the curb does not take a direct hit from any tools. It is best to wait a few weeks before you begin any major replanting or changes to your bed area. Keep in mind, do not allow anyone to dig underneath the curb or run over the curb with a vehicle. Your curb is only as good as it foundation, and it is not designed to be run over by a vehicle.
Sounds good, but can anyone truly afford this?
Compared to the “do it yourself” blocks that you can purchase and install yourself or pay to be put in, our prices are very comparable. In addition, the color and style of your border is unique to your home.
